Daily living in Medini, Iskandar Puteri — schools, groceries, healthcare, transport
Groceries, school fees, the hospital next door, buses, border rules and what the bills actually come to — the questions we get every week, answered with receipts. Verified August 2026.
| Store | Character | Where | From Medini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaya Grocer (Sunway Citrine Hub) | Premium grocer, strong imported/expat range | Sunway Citrine Hub, Persiaran Medini 3 | In Medini · ~5 min |
| NSK Trade City | Warehouse-style hypermarket, cheapest fresh produce | Jalan Medini Selatan 1 (also at Sunway Big Box) | In Medini · ~5 min |
| Jaya Grocer flagship (Eco Galleria) | Its biggest Johor outlet (opened Sept 2023) | Eco Galleria, Eco Botanic | ~10–15 min |
| Lotus's Bukit Indah | Full-line hypermarket (ex-Tesco) | Bukit Indah | ~10–12 min |
| AEON Bukit Indah | Department store + supermarket, mall setting | AEON Mall Bukit Indah | ~9–12 min |
| Village Grocer | Premium grocer, imported range | The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey | ~30–35 min |
Mall of Medini also holds a walkable supermarket for basics. Pharmacies: Watsons and Guardian both operate at Sunway Big Box (~5–10 min), with more chains in the Bukit Indah strip. There is no wet market in Medini itself — the closest traditional markets are toward Gelang Patah and Bukit Indah.
Gleneagles Hospital Medini Johor (IHH Healthcare) is Medini's healthcare anchor: around 200 beds, 35+ specialties, 95+ specialist doctors, centres of excellence spanning stroke, cancer and robotic surgery, a health-screening centre and dedicated international-patient services — roughly 20 minutes from the Singapore-Tuas checkpoint, minutes from Medini's residences. Columbia Asia Iskandar Puteri (24/7 emergency, MSQH-accredited) is 15–20 minutes toward JB; KPJ specialist hospitals and the large public Hospital Sultanah Aminah are in the city centre.
Costs are the quiet draw for cross-border families: 2026 guides put a comprehensive private health screening at RM2,000–2,700, an MRI at RM2,000–4,500 and major procedures 25–75% below Singapore private prices — one reason Singaporeans increasingly pair a Medini home with their healthcare.
EduCity Iskandar, 5–10 minutes from Medini, concentrates international education unusually tightly: schools (Marlborough College Malaysia adjacent, Raffles American School, IDRISSI International, Link International) and tertiary campuses (Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, MMU's Faculty of Cinematic Arts, University of Reading Malaysia, Kolej MDIS, Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology) share the zone with a public-bookable sports complex. Note one common outdated claim: University of Southampton Malaysia moved out of EduCity in 2021 — to Eco Galleria, still within Iskandar Puteri.

*Fee figures from each school's official fee page where available, August 2026; they revise annually and are subject to Malaysia's 6% SST — always confirm with the school. More options (Invictus Horizon Hills, Stellar, Austin-area schools) sit within 15–35 minutes.
A car is the default. Grab is reliable across Iskandar Puteri — short hops typically RM5–12, Senai Airport ~RM40–50; expect surge at rush hour and in rain.
Causeway Link CW7P runs Puteri Harbour–Medini–Second Link CIQ daily, ~04:45–22:15, RM2.00–4.50, cashless only — with through-connections to Singapore services.
Tuas Second Link: ~13 min drive from Medini before immigration queues (peak and holiday queues can multiply that). Woodlands Causeway: 25–30 km, realistically 30–50 min before immigration.
On track: trials began Dec 2025; completion targeted 31 Dec 2026, passenger service from January 2027. Honest note for Medini: it departs Bukit Chagar in JB city, ~30 min away — the Second Link stays your everyday route.
Actively enforced since 1 July 2025: no valid VEP RFID tag risks a RM300 fine and being held from exiting Malaysia. Tag: RM10 for 5 years via the official JPJ portal; RM20 road charge per entry.
Typical month at ~400 kWh under the post-2025 tariff; air-con-heavy homes run higher.
Four-person household at ~25 m³ under Johor's Sept 2025 tiers — near-negligible.
